ARTIST STATEMENT
The integral themes of my practice are absurdity, pointlessness and repetition. I enjoy the way the viewers see pointless acts, contrasted with the way I see satisfaction. I crave to make each piece; the need to have completeness through by filling an empty space. I use predominantly drawing with fineliner, biro and pencil, but there can be a range of medias used depending on which goal I'm trying to achieve. The titles reflect that there is an element of humour to each piece I make, as I like the obvious to be pointed out and with absurdity comes humour. Small details are important to me; everything I make starts out small then grows in scale as to not be ignored. The majority of my influences are obtained through the Process Art and Minimalist movements, looking at On Kawara and Hanne Darboven in particular. I feel a connection to these two as their work reflects routine and repetition on an absurd scale. Furthermore, the work of Simón Granell has informed me greatly; his paintings that take months to complete by layering paint, and the waiting, patient aspect of his process I admire. I show the process of the making come through in the final piece; there's a want for the mundane, repetitious actions to be acknowledged. It is important that I allow chance and mistakes to occur naturally, so that the work is not interpreted as being robotic in any way. There is also an unconscious desire that I battle to create perfect works. I enjoy that there is a human element. I'm constantly questioning whether there is an end to what I create? Repetition plays an important part and this means it never has to end-but should it?
